The last time I was in New York it was two weeks before the city went into lock down. Recently I was able to make it back for a nice visit, right when this beautiful city lifted all of its COVID restrictions.
Having the opportunity to be there during this pivotal moment I was able to shoot some really personal, thought provoking work. In 2.5 days I walked 33 miles and barely slept, fully taking in every moment—many of which were shared with my wife and family.
I consider NY my second home—having lived there for 10 years it taught me quite a bit. My family and closest friends (who are simply just family) all reside in and around NYC and I made most of these images with all of them in mind.
NYC is a sensory explosion that makes you truly feel alive. From the simplest gesture to signs of affection, love and everything in between, it was all happening everywhere I turned. Seeing the human spirit alive again and the ability to connect with each other and make physical contact is what spoke to me the most.
The work I create always comes from the heart and capturing the spontaneous, fleeting moments of life is what photography is all about. I shot a couple hundred frames and these 32 images are the ones that resonate with me. I try my best to stay true to simple photographic technique and I make an image only when it truly speaks to me. My post processing technique is simple... dodge, burn and minor adjustments that could be done in a darkroom.
Please take the time to really study these and enjoy!
Much love.
